The Department of Business Languages and International Relations held its annual Languages Clubs Handover and Awards Ceremony on Friday, September 20, 2024, in ADB Theatre 2. The event aimed to appreciate the importance of multilingualism. Various participants were awarded prizes in recognition of their active participation since the 2nd MUBS Business Languages Festival held in March 2024.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Bugingo Don Patrick, representing the Head of the Department Dr. Abbey Mutumba, thanked and encouraged students to recognize the power of languages as a vital skill in this era. He emphasized the pivotal role these clubs play in shaping well-rounded business professionals.

Among the key attendees was the Dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Milburga Atcero, who graced the ceremony with an inspiring speech. There was also representation from the Principal’s office, highlighting the importance of language proficiency in modern business environments.

The second edition of the Business Languages Festival’s handover and awards ceremony took place at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) on Friday, September 20, 2024. To promote linguistic diversity and cross-cultural engagement, the event brought together students, staff, and representatives from numerous language clubs, including Swahili, German, Arabic, French, Chinese, and many more.

Held under the theme of promoting multilingualism within the business community, the event featured an array of performances, speeches, and awards, marking the successful conclusion of the festival. The festival, which has grown in popularity, provides a platform for students to showcase their language skills, foster cross-cultural interactions, and prepare for the global job market where multilingualism is increasingly valuable.

A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition and awarding of outstanding participants and contributors to the festival. Among them was MUBS TV, honored for being the official media partner for the event, playing a crucial role in capturing and broadcasting the vibrant activities throughout the festival. Other notable partners included Tropical Bank, Nile Breweries, Onomo Hotel, Eduserv Agency, Voccent Application, Uganda Mweeso Association, Yunik Talent Guide, Lakeside College Luzira, and Seeta High School.

The Chinese Club was recognized as the most outstanding language club, while the German Club won the soccer tournament held as a pre-activity. The French, Kiswahili, and Arabic clubs were also acknowledged for their continued efforts in promoting multilingualism within and outside the institution. The event provided opportunities for networking, refreshments, and photo moments.

The smooth handover underscores the continuity and growth of these clubs as vital components of the MUBS student community. The participating companies and organizations assured their continued presence and collaboration in future events, spotlighting student achievements and the vibrant cultural life at Makerere University Business School.
